Buckhead History and Amenities

Buckhead is a residential and commercial area of Atlanta known for the stately homes and upscale shopping, for being a center of finance and a major commercial district.  Around the turn of the twentieth century, Buckhead consisted of farm land, forests, and country estates.  Then in 1907, the Atlanta streetcar line from downtown Atlanta was extended to Buckhead.  This provided public transportation connecting the country estates in Buckhead with downtown.  After this, many of the owners of these estates made the area their permanent residence.  Over time, the Buckhead area was developed further by subdividing large tracts of land into residential lots.  This growth continued when in the 1950's, Buckhead was annexed into the City of Atlanta.  The growth of the population and development of the commercial areas in Buckhead continue through the present day.

Buckhead’s historic residential area built up around several significant projects: Peachtree Heights, Garden Hills, West Paces Ferry Road, and others. In more recent times, the historic neighborhoods have been supplemented with high-rise commercial buildings and condominiums. Major shopping centers such as Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza attract shoppers from all around the southeastern United States.
