Morningside Lenox Park Neighborhood History & Nearby Amenities
The Morningside Lenox Park neighborhoods are today a collection of intown Atlanta neighborhoods. The oldest of these, Morningside was originally developed north of the city of Atlanta in 1923. This suburb was advertised for its 70-foot wide paved streets in front of homes. In 1925, the Morningside Lenox Park area was annexed into the City of Atlanta. Streetcars and new paved streets were extended along North Highland Avenue from Virginia Avenue. The Morningside Elementary school opened in the neighborhood in 1929.
Morningside Elementary is consistently listed as one of the top performing schools in Georgia. In 2016, Morningside Elementary was a National Blue Ribbon School awardee. This is a recognition by the U.S. Department of Education for schools that, “feature effective teaching and learning at all grade levels, in all geographic settings, and with all students.” For more info on this, visit the National Blue Ribbon School program website here.
The neighborhoods in Morningside Lenox Park under threat of being broken up by a six-lane highway called Interstate 485 that was proposed 1965 to cut through the neighborhood. This proposed highway brought residents together in opposition of the highway, forming the Morningside Lenox Park Association (MLPA). The MLPA, along with other neighborhood organizations, successfully defeated the proposed highway project which was halted in 1973.
Morningside Lenox Park is located in close proximity to the Atlanta Beltline Eastside trail, one of the most popular areas of recreation and entertainment in Atlanta. This “rail-to-trail” conversion has recently spurred many adaptive re-use projects converting older industrial buildings into industrial-chic office-retail spaces, offering a multitude of dining and shopping opportunities to visitors. Morningside Lenox Park is also close to Piedmont Park and other city parks.
