Discover the Beauty of Sea Island, Georgia: A Stand-Up Paddle Boarding Adventure

Introduction

Last week, over the 4th of July holiday, I had the chance to explore the salt marshes of Sea Island, Georgia and St. Simons Island on a stand-up paddle board. As someone who has enjoyed Sea Island since childhood vacations and even worked for the Sea Island Company one summer during college, I’m excited to share this adventure with you. This past week, we introduced our 1-year old daughter to Sea Island for the first time, while our 3-year old experienced it again.

The Paddleboarding Tour

From the moment I stepped onto my paddleboard, I was surrounded by the serene beauty of Sea Island’s marshlands. The water was as smooth as glass, the vibrant wildlife was captivating, and the breathtaking views made this an unforgettable adventure.

I spotted many coastal birds, including Geat Egrets, Ospreys, the stunning pink Roseate Spoonbill, and Pelicans. Did you know over 300 species of birds have been recorded on Little St. Simons, an 11,000 acre private island next to Sea Island? It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise!

While paddleboarding, I saw numerous small fish swimming below me, a blue crab, and bottlenose dolphins. Coming around a quiet bend in the waterway, I happened across these two fishermen in ocean kayaks. The marsh is teaming with life and offers incredible fishing opportunities.

Tips for Your Paddleboarding Trip to Sea Island

How can I make the most of my paddleboarding trip to Sea Island?

Exploring the areas around here is an adventure you won’t want to miss, but a little preparation can make it even better. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your paddle boarding trip:

  • Go Early: To catch the best wildlife sightings and enjoy the calmest waters, plan your trip early in the morning.

  • Stay Comfortable: Make sure to wear comfortable, water-resistant clothing and don’t forget your sunscreen and hat. A long-sleeve shirt that offers SPF protection is a great option.

  • Stay Safe: Check the local weather conditions before you head out. Bring plenty of water - a camelback water container is perfect for paddle boarding.

  • Do A Guided Tour With A Local Expert: Sea Island staff offer rentals and guided tours starting at 10 am during summer months. Consider a guided tour with the Sea Island Company or rent paddle boards, sunfish sailboats, and kayaks from Rainbow Island.

  • Check the Tides: Ask Sea Island staff about tide directions for the best paddle experience. Starting against the tide ensures an easier return trip.

  • Know About Wildlife And Keep Your Distance: Be aware of sharp oyster shells called “blades” and take precautions to avoid unpleasant wildlife encounters.

The marsh flats of the Golden Isles are brilliant and full of life themselves, featuring every shade of green and yellow grasses. The marshes provide habitat and cover for too many birds and living creatures to count. Architectural Marvel: The Sea Island Cloister

Why visit the Sea Island Cloister?

Architecture lovers will be captivated by the Sea Island Cloister, originally designed in Mediterranean style by Addison Mizner in 1928. The original hotel was replaced in 2003 with a new $350 million iteration, designed by interior designer Pamela Hughes and Sea Island's master architect, Peter Capone. In 2015, a stunning $40 million expansion by Hart Howerton further enhanced The Cloister, preserving its historic charm while adding modern luxury.
